## Fire Retardant Fabrics: Your top 5 questions answered

For many design projects, particularly those in the commercial arena, Fire Retardant fabrics are imperative. With stringent safety standards to comply with and the need to reassure the end-user, Fire Retardant (FR) fabrics become the essential choice. But with so many different kinds of FR fabrics on the market, researching your options can be a bit of a minefield.

With this in mind, we answer the top five questions our clients ask us about Fire Retardant fabrics…

 

### 1. What are Fire Retardant fabrics?

A Fire Retardant (FR) fabric is one that has reduced flammability, either because of its naturally-occurring properties or because of a chemical treatment that has been applied to it. In the textile industry, a fabric is classed as Fire Retardant based on the temperature at which it ignites and the length of time it takes to burn. The resulting score assigned to the fabric allows you to make an informed choice about the type of fabric you wish to select for your project.

2. What are Fire Retardant fabrics made from and how are they classified?

There are essentially two types of FR fabrics. Those that are Inherently Fire Retardant because of naturally-occurring properties in the fibres, and those that are chemically treated to create FR properties. Inherently Fire Retardant (IFR) fabrics can be made from wool, silk or polyester. All FR-One fabrics are made from a 100% polyester yarn which is inherently Fire Retardant and is suitable for a wide variety of applications.

 

The textile industry classifies fabrics into six different types, depending on their flammability…

 

1. **Fire Retardant (FR)**: Fabrics that are fire retardant or resistant through topical treatment, adhering to the NFPA 701 (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines.
2. **Inherently Fire Retardant (IFR)**: Fabrics that are Fire Retardant without requiring any additional chemical treatment. These fabrics uphold the NFPA 701 standard.
3. **Non-Fire Retardant (NFR)**: Fabrics that are not in any way fire-resistant or Fire Retardant.
4. **Durably Fire Retardant (DFR)**:Synthetic fabrics that are considered flame retardant for a lifetime. Washing or cleaning these fabrics does not affect their fire resistance.
5. **Can Be Made Fire Retardant (CBFR)**:Fabrics that can be treated to become flame retardant.
6. **Cannot Be Made Fire Retardant (CNFR)**:Fabrics that cannot be processed or treated to become fire resistant. Not suitable for use in public spaces.

### 3. Can FR fabrics be used for purposes other than curtains and upholstery?

Absolutely! Fire Retardant fabrics can be just as versatile as any other type of fabric. As well as using them for conventional purposes such as curtains and upholstery, they can be used to make lampshades or ceiling canopies.

 

### 4. Are Fire Retardant fabrics environmentally-friendly?

Yes, they often are. Thanks to a certification system called Oeko-Tex, most Fire Retardant fabrics meet stringent [environmental](https://blog.fr-one.com/en/going-green-why-fr-one-fabrics-are-the-eco-friendly-choice) standards relating to production, sustainability and ecology.

 

Oeko-Tex is an environmental certification system addressing the entire textile production process. For a product to be awarded Oeko-Tex’s ‘Standard 100’ certificate, it must undergo rigorous testing ensuring its production process is safe both for the environment and for the people who come into contact with the product. Choosing an Oeko-Tex certified fabric means peace of mind for both you and your end-user.

### 5. What about safety standards

The textile industry is highly regulated, so you can rest assured that all Fire Retardant fabrics have to meet stringent safety requirements. Welkom bij BRU TEXTILES

BRU TEXTILES en gerelateerde ondernemingen respecteren uw privacy. Deze privacyverklaring geeft bondig weer de wijze waarop uw persoonsgegevens worden verzameld en worden verwerkt door BRU TEXTILES, afhankelijk van uw relatie met BRU TEXTILES.

Deze privacyverklaring werd laatst bijgewerkt in het licht van de algemene verordening gegevensbescherming (AVG) of beter gekend onder General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) die van kracht is op 25 mei 2018. Dit nieuw wettelijk kader geeft EU-burgers meer controle over hun persoonlijke gegevens en zorgt voor meer databescherming doorheen Europa. Deze nieuwe verordening geldt wereldwijd voor alle ondernemingen en organisaties die persoonsgegevens bijhouden en verwerken van Europese staatsburgers (onafhankelijk of er al dan niet betaald wordt voor diensten of producten) en alle ondernemingen en organisaties die gevestigd zijn binnen de Europese Economische Ruimte.

Wij kunnen onze privacyverklaring aanpassen naar aanleiding van nieuwe of aangepaste verwerkingen. Wij raden daarom aan om deze regelmatig te bekijken. Bij  significante wijzigingen aan onze privacyverklaring zullen wij gebruik maken van een pop-up op de website.

Welke persoonsgegevens verwerken wij?

BRU TEXTILES verwerkt verscheidene persoonsgegevens afhankelijk van uw relatie of samenwerking met BRU TEXTILES.

Hoe hebben wij uw persoonsgegevens verkregen?

   Wij verkrijgen uw persoonsgegevens die u rechtstreeks met  ons meedeelt. Dit kan via verschillende kanalen zoals via een werknemer of een ondernaannemer. In sommige gevallen kan het zijn dat wij uw persoonsgegevens verkrijgen via publieke databanken of kennissen. Indien dit het geval is zullen wij u hierover informeren tijdens ons eerste contact zoals de wetgeving vereist.
2. Als leverancier
   
   Wij verkrijgen uw persoonsgegevens die u rechtstreeks met  ons meedeelt. In sommige gevallen kan het zijn dat wij uw persoonsgegevens verkrijgen via publieke databanken of kennissen. Indien dit het geval is zullen wij u hierover informeren tijdens ons eerste contact zoals de wetgeving vereist.
3. Als sollicitant

Wij verkrijgen de persoonsgegevens die u met ons meedeelt  via uw sollicitatie. Daarnaast kan het zijn dat wij beroep doen op derde partijen (vorige werkgevers) voor referenties.

Wij delen uw persoonsgegevens met derde partijen die  ons communicatiediensten en IT-diensten verlenen voor zover als nodig voor de uitvoering van onze verwerkingen. Wij verzekeren u echter dat al onze derde partijen de nodige maatregelen nemen om uw privacy te garanderen.

Wij zullen uw persoonsgegevens niet delen met andere dan de bovenstaande vermelde derde partijen zonder we hiervoor expliciete toestemming hebben verkregen. Daarnaast kan het nog zijn dat wij uw persoonsgegevens moeten delen wegens onderzoek naar onrechtmatige of illegale activiteiten via onze website, mogelijke gevallen van fraude, mogelijke handelingen die potentieel bedreigend zijn voor de veiligheid in het algemeen of de veiligheid van een persoon, mogelijke schendingen van de gebruiksvoorwaarden of om deze activiteiten / deze activiteiten / handelingen te voorkomen of om nodige actie te ondernemen om deze activiteiten / handelingen te stoppen of om ons te verdedigen tegen juridische claims. Hoe lang bewaren wij uw persoonsgegevens?

BRU TEXTILES verbindt zich ertoe uw persoonsgegevens niet langer te bewaren binnen het doel waarvoor we deze hebben verzameld.

   Persoonsgegevens van klanten zullen wij bewaren voor een termijn van maximaal 10 jaar na de laatste aankoop.
2. Als leverancier
   
   Persoonsgegevens van leveranciers zullen wij bewaren voor een termijn van maximaal 10 jaar na de laatste order.
3. Als sollicitant

Persoonsgegevens van sollicitanten zullen wij bewaren voor een termijn van maximaal 1 jaar na de sollicitatieprocedure.

Indien wij uw gegevens toch wensen te bewaren voor een langere termijn zullen wij hiervoor expliciete toestemming vragen.

Hoe worden jouw gegevens beveiligd tegen verlies, misbruik of ongewilde manipulatie?

Ten einde de informatie die wij onder onze controle hebben te beschermen tegen verlies, misbruik of ongewilde manipulatie hebben we gepaste fysieke, elektronische en managerial procedures geïnstalleerd om de beschikbaarheid, confidentialiteit en integriteit van uw persoonsgegevens te garanderen. Bij wijze van voorbeeld, onze servers zijn uitsluitend toegankelijk voor geautoriseerd personeel, uw persoonsgegevens uitsluitend gedeeld met personeel op een “need to know basis” - uitsluitend met het oog op het realiseren van de transactie en het u verstrekken van de gevraagde diensten. Bovendien wordt er bij nieuwe projecten die mogelijks een impact kunnen hebben op uw privacy een uitgebreide analyse gedaan om uw rechten, de veiligheid en bescherming van uw persoonsgegevens te garanderen.  Moest er zich toch een incident voordoen waarbij uw persoonsgegevens betrokken zijn, dan wordt u persoonlijk verwittigd in de door de wet voorziene omstandigheden.

Welke mogelijkheden heeft u met betrekking tot uw rechten?

U kan op ieder moment uw interesses wijzigen en in- of uitschrijven op enige marketing of promotionele nieuwsbrief of –mailing. BRU TEXTILES behoudt zich het recht voor uw dienst gerelateerde communicatie over te maken als deel van uw BRU TEXTILES account, zonder dat u hieromtrent de mogelijkheid hebt om u hiervoor af te melden. U kan op ieder ogenblik je accountsettings wijzigen of up daten.

Indien u uw persoonsgegevens deelt met BRU TEXTILES verkrijgt u hierover een aantal rechten. BRU TEXTILES respecteert deze rechten en  stelt transparantie en accuraatheid van uw persoonsgegevens voorop. U hebt als individu daarom het recht op:

- Inzage en overdraagbaarheid van uw persoonsgegevens;
- Aanpassing (rectificatie) van uw persoonsgegevens indien deze foutief of onvolledig zijn;
- tijdelijke (of definitieve) beperking van de verwerking van uw persoonsgegevens\*;
- Wissing van uw persoonsgegevens\*\*;
- Uzelf te verzetten tegen het gebruik van uw persoonsgegevens voor direct marketing-doeleinden.

 

\* U moet er bij deze rechten rekening mee houden dat BRU TEXTILES mogelijk niet langer in staat is sommige diensten aan te bieden. Zo zal u bij BRU TEXTILES geen producten meer kunnen kopen of zal u niet  meer gecontacteerd kunnen worden voor mogelijke vacatures.

\*\* BRU TEXTILES behoudt zich het recht te bepalen of uw verzoek gerechtvaardigd is. Bovendien moeten wij ons in sommige gevallen aan enkele wettelijke bewaartermijnen houden, waardoor we uw verzoek tot gegevenswissing niet volledig kunnen inwilligen. In dat geval zullen wij wel evalueren welke persoonsgegevens we desgevallend reeds kunnen wissen en u daarvan op de hoogte stellen.

Moest u verder klachten hebben over de naleving van de privacyverklaring, dient u ons eerst te contacteren. Indien u daarna nog een onopgelost probleem heeft waarvan u vindt dat wij dit niet naar behoren hebben beantwoord, kan u contact opnemen met de Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit.

Indien u uw rechten wenst uit te oefenen of klachten wenst in te dienen vragen wij u wel eerst te identificeren met een kopie van de voorkant van uw identiteitskaart om te voorkomen dat dit iemand in uw naam zou doen. Wij zullen dit kopie na controle meteen verwijderen. Daarnaast vragen wij u ook steeds zo specifiek mogelijk te zijn zodat wij optimaal aan uw noden kunnen voldoen. Wij zullen u steeds van  antwoord dienen binnen de wettelijk bepaalde  termijn van  30 dagen.
