Quality over quantity: our minimalist approach to design

Written by Jessica Maybury | Oct 23, 2020 9:22:42 AM

Minimalist design has been a strong trend in recent years, visible in so many different spaces, and on so many different platforms at the same time.

We have reflected this neutral, understated styling in our fire-retardant fabric ranges in the past…but what if we told you that minimalism isn’t solely about clean lines, negative space, and decluttering your home?

Minimalism, simple living, and fabric collections

Strictly speaking, minimalism is an art movement that has its beginnings in the years following the Second World War. It encompasses music and visual arts, fashion, literature, architecture design and even what is now referred to ‘lifestyle design’.

It is everywhere from our Instagram feeds, to keynote speeches at business conferences to hotel lobby layouts and onwards.

At FR-One, we continually refresh, revive and re-promote our best-selling collections of inherently fire retardant fabrics. These collections have a proven record of accomplishment in the marketplace, so it’s important their longevity and value is fully maximised. In a saturated market, this approach to textile design is preferable to simply producing more and more new ranges for the ‘thrill of the new’.

Minimalism as we know it today fuses a visually clean simplicity with lifestyle ideas around simple living. Quality, when combined with technical excellence, is a long-term solution for a better world.

A minimalist mindset is needed now more than ever

Consumers have been focused on keeping up with fashion, whether in apparel, new tech gadgets, or even entire décor styles. It’s better (healthier!) for us all to make the switch from that point of view to one that values intentional design choices, a slower pace of life, and investing in durable, well-designed products that last.

The core idea is that we should value well-designed products that delight us, and are essential to our lives and our businesses.

This is the first step down the path of appreciating the inherent value in a quality, proven product rather than value the idea of just frittering away personal and professional budgets just to have more things to have.

We believe in investing in our existing collections of fire-retardant fabrics. We believe that the minimalist idea of quality over quantity is more meaningful in both our private and professional lives. Durability comes into play here too because if you intentionally choose a certain fabric range, or make certain design choices in its creation, you are doing it with an eye to the future.

Sustainable design choices for conscious consumers

Making thoughtful decisions, as a concept, invites us to take a step back and look at how we are conducting business. How are we influencing the world around us, both ecologically and socially? Higher quality fabrics last longer, reducing the need of our customers to go opt for disposable solutions that are ultimately harming our planet.

The famous slogan of sustainable design is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Making careful choices with durable products plays a part in this – especially when these durable, well-designed products are partly created from recycled materials.

Thank you for reading our article today! It’s so important to declutter our mindsets as well as our houses. It’s equally important to declutter the way we do business. Contact us today for extra information and resources on our quality over quantity ethos. We look forward to working with you.
